But one worm attracts more and they still have a mission to complete, so get ready for a second and third worm. The other objectives forced them to stay in the encounter as it escalated. This sort of forced them to take risks and not play safe or just deal nuclear damage to the enemies. It was a rescue mission that involved saving allies that were engaged in combat with other enemies. Second, the players had an objective to complete in the encounter that was more than just combat. In this way, it wouldn't even have mattered if they'd spawned a worm or not, since the mechanics of the encounter is already affecting their decisions, and no worms appearing would now be a genuine achievement (but that's not how it went down). The players' choices mattered, and they could choose whether to take risks or not. But dice rolls were only triggered by the actions of characters on the board at the time. When I ran my purple worm encounter, it went over pretty well, so I'll highlight two of the things I think made the most difference.įirst, the progression of the worm counter wasn't random. You put a mechanic like this in play, it's no surprise that the players throw everything they've got at the boss, this kind of ticking time bomb will force them to go all-out. No, the main appeal of a mechanic like this is TENSION. With what you've described here, the difficulty of summoning murder comets isn't the thing, otherwise you would just have as many comets as you wanted to make the fight difficult. Right so this reminds me of an encounter I ran recently with purple worms, where causing any vibrations in the ground would advance a counter that would cause more purple worms to appear. Thanks!ĮDIT: The turns are at the end of the Boss’ turn once each round. The players WRECKED the encounter and bounced by round 4, making the whole thing irrelevant.īut, I still love the concept! Is there any hope for it? Or am I wholly a fool?Īll earnest opinions (even candid negative criticism) are sincerely appreciated. In my campaign, I miscalculated how deadly the boss was and debuffed them when they REALLY needed a buff against my party. It continues indefinitely until the effect triggers in the initial location. On their first turn, they activate the ability to POSSIBLY summon a swarm of Murder Comets (CR5 each).
